Co-author Peyton Goddard is autistic and nonverbal, and uses facilitated communication.[1]
Autism
Charity is autistic and nonverbal.[2] She uses facilitated communication.
Reception
The book has received criticism for its positive portrayal of facilitated communication, a widely discredited and controversial technique. Autistic co-author Peyton Goddard also uses facilitated communication. This has caused some to call into question the extent to which Goddard's contributions to the novel are her own, and to which degree they originate from the facilitation partner.[3]
