Rejected characters

From Autistic characters wiki
(Redirected from Janet Frame)

This is a list of characters that are currently rejected from the wiki. This may be for a variety of reasons:

  • They are stated to be open for interpretation
  • They are explicitly stated to not be autistic
  • No sources supporting autism could be found
  • Sources referencing autism are ambiguous (e.g. "perhaps on the autism spectrum", "a little bit autistic")

Marcy Wu Amphibia Creator states the character was not written as autistic[1][2][3][4][5] One writer says he approached her as if she were autistic but does not have the power to decide what is canon.[6]
Janet Frame An Angel at My Table Character, like the real-life person she is based on, was diagnosed with schizophrenia. No sources supporting autism found.
James Jones Behind the Mask Is shown to have a developmental disability, the nature of which is not specified. No sources supporting autism found. Based on a real-life man with intellectual disability.[7]

Lucas Turner Criminal Minds Is shown to have a developmental disability, the nature of which is not specified. The exact wording used to profile the character is "There's a collection of drawings up here that suggest autism or moderate mental retardation."
Claudette Morel Dead by Daylight While much of the lore (particularly "Claudette's 8th Birthday") points towards her being autistic, this is never explicitly named.
Anthony Dead Man's Shoes Is derogatorily referred to as "retarded" within the movie. Director labels him as special needs.[11] No sources supporting autism found.
Patrick De Patrick (Patrick) Direct states the character is not autistic.[12][13]
Derek Noakes Derek Creator states the character was not written as having a specific disability.[14][15][16]
Percival "Percy" King Epithet Erased Creator states "she's whatever you want her to be"[17]
Jason Falsettos No sources supporting autism found.
Forrest Gump Forrest Gump Is described as having an IQ of 75. No sources supporting autism found.
Will Graham Hannibal Creator Bryan Fuller states that Will has an empathy disorder but does not have Asperger's.[18][19] Actor Hugh Dancy says he does not have Asperger's.[20]

Kamille Bidan Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam In episode 9 of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Kamille uses the term "jiheishō" to describe himself, roughly saying "I'm just an autistic child".[22] It is near-certain that this is a misuse of the term to mean depression/withdrawal/neuroticism/anti-social/shyness. At the time the series was made, this was not an uncommon misconception, and the director has a track record of misusing autism to mean those other things.[23] The English dub uses the word "neurotic" in this instance.[24] I know dubs aren't perfect but it's likely that the translators knew of this whole "saying autism when they mean something else" thing and kept this in mind for localization.
Steven Grant Moon Knight Sources are ambiguous: "making him maybe slightly on the spectrum"[1], "I saw him as a bit on the spectrum"[2]
Janet Michaels No Other Love Both characters are described as "retarded". No sources supporting autism found.
Andrew Madison
Seymour "Sy" Parrish One Hour Photo [25]
Paprika Despite the IMDb entry being tagged with Asperger's syndrome, no sources supporting autism could be found.
Chithan Pithamagan Grows up without human contact. No sources supporting autism found.
Cassandra Rage of the Dragons As with Kamille Bidan, I believe it is highly likely that this is a misuse of the term "autism". Particularly "developing an autistic case" and "avoid to fall into a worst case of autism where she may lose all contact with reality" point towards a meaning more akin to depression or psychosis.

Jamie Benjamin The Pit A classic rendition of the "disturbed child" trope in horror. Screenwriter Ian Stuart mentions that the character is inspired by real-life children with autism and mental illness, but director Lew Lehman made significant changes to the script that impact the characterization of the mental state of the character (like making the Trogs real creatures and not just figments of his imagination/manifestations of his psychosis).[33] Though press often banked the character as autistic, there are no sources to support this claim.
