Character creation
Dustbin Baby is based on the novel of the same name by Jacqueline Wilson. In the novel, Poppy has Down syndrome.
For the movie adaptation, Poppy is listed as having Asperger's. The casting company sought out teenage girls who are either autistic themselves or who knew enough about autism to portray the character well.[1] They ended up casting Lizzy Clark, who has Asperger's syndrome. It was Clark's first acting role.[2][3]
Biography
Poppy attends the Fairdale residential school, where she befriends April, the movie's main character.
