Zane is the main character in the picture book Ally My Stripes by Shaina Rudolph and Danielle Royer.
Character creation
Author Danielle Royer has a younger brother with autism. My scenes from the book are inspired by real-life experiences.[1]
The book features a foreword by Alison Singer, president of the Autism Science Foundation. It also includes a reading guide, and a "Note to Parents and Caregivers" with additional information about autism. It is published by the American Psychological Association.
Autism
Zane struggles with not being understood due to his autism, and is upset that other people only ever see his autism stripe. He uses a paintbrush to finger paint because he dislikes the texture on his hooves, he cries at the sound of the fire alarm, and he doesn't know how to approach others to talk about his favorite video game. His mom cheers him up by pointing out all the others stripes that make him who he is—his keen sense of navigation, he sense of justice and honesty, his curiosity.
